My page is listed on page 40. right above my listing is Mutual Of Omaha, which is a huge company. they are like the microsoft of the insurance world. they have a PR of 6. Right above them, is a page from some random blog, with a PR of 0. Wth is going on

@felgallAug 17.2006 — You are examining just one of 1000 or more factors that go into determining the ordering of the results. The Page Rank of a page only indicates the relative status of incoming versus outgoing links and has only a little to do with the actual ranking that Google assigns to the whole page for specific keywords. It would probably be less confusing if Google's Larry Page had a different surname so that the linking rank named after him had a different name than Page Rank.

@15hoursNowauthorAug 17.2006 — its not so much the page rank that has me confused. I know that is only a minor thing taken into consideration for actual ranking. What confuses me is how a bloggers page beats out the site for Mutual of Omaha. Anyway...what are some other things that google looks at for ranking? I need to move my page up a few dozen places in the order it appears.

@pcthugAug 18.2006 — There are a couple of reasons the blog may be leading in the search results;

More inbound links (especially from related sites)

Excessive use of the keywords car insurance omaha in Title, Meta, Heading and Alt tags.

URI manipulated for search engines

etc.

@frippAug 18.2006 — there are SO MANY things to say...

* FIRST, you may be querying during the time google updates its' servers (lookup "google dance"). that would explain that blog showing so high.

*
the "page rank" from the google toolbar is sometimes WAY off... a google employee once was quoted as saying it was "for entertainment purposes only."

* even IF your pagerank is high, there are still LOADS of reasons the other pages might show higher, felgall and PCTHUG are right about the things they mentioned....

-- the best thing for you to do is concentrating on improving your page -- i don't necessarily mean changing what appears on screen, either.

common mistakes people make:

diluting keystring strength with excessive code, which bots can choke on. (run all scripts externally)

doing things that get you penalized as a possible spammer. (too much keyword repitition, etc.)

using frames.

not alt-tagging images, or not tagging them properly.

creating code bots have a hard time crawling...

*
remember that PAGERANK isn't the be-all and end-all of a page showing up for a given query...

the microsoft homepage may have a load of PR-- but it doesn't show up when you query "Baldness Cures."

likewise, you may have a page called BOB'S STEAKHOUSE IN OMAHA with HUGE PageRank -- and it STILL won't show for "BEST RESTAURANT OMAHA" (unless you have many inbounds with that as anchor text, etc.)

** ALSO REMEMBER ** your keywords may be highly coveted... if you have TONS of competition for popular keywords or strings, there are even more variables to consider... for ex, your "competition" may be updating their pages frequently, which sometimes push already popular pages slightly higher.

** GOOD LUCK...

IRONIC the subject came up:

- robert f. has a very good blog.

drove me crazy, because i read it once and had trouble finding it again: his site DOESN'T google high for "robert fripp blog" but DOES for "robert fripp journal." (both without quotes... right now his one of his sister's pages shows number 1 for "robert fripp blog.")

the name of the page is: Robert Fripp's Diary
