Using dreamweaver add-ons to make database websites…

is it normal practice for developers to use addon software to create websites?

I took some work on last week to make a few changes to a clients website, however when I’ve come to make the changes and I’ve dug deep into the code, it turns out all the form validations and database connections etc have been done using dreamweaver addons. So basically the website contains hundreds of class files all full of different functions and it’s almost impossible for me to do the work in the time or at the price I quoted.

I’ve had a look at the software that’s been used and the cost of the software is more than what I was charging for the updates.

The thing is, I had a quick look at the code of the site before I took the work on, however it’s not until you dig into the pages that you start to notice that one function points to another, which then points to another, and that points to another, and there is absolutely no reference to which files contain which functions.

I’ve never heard of developers building whole websites using dreamweaver addons, but this site is almost 100% developed using the addons.

@KDLAAug 14.2006 — Actually, it's a pretty common practice. I've seen sites built with nothing but FrontPage add-ons, effects, etc. Even worse -- sites built entirely in Word or Photoshop.

To cut some designers some slack, sometimes it is the template they've decided to use, rather than their "preference." I've noticed that the templates in Dreamweaver do have heavy "Dreamweaver-esque" coding.

However, for the most part, it's getting things done quickly, with minimal intervention.

problem is, is reduces the chances of another developer being able to easily make amendments to a website.

@KDLAAug 14.2006 — Yep. But in those cases, the designer isn't thinking about the future, only about the present: getting the site done ASAP. Plus, it's a marketable attribute of the designer for contract renewal: I'm the only person who can do this site because it is built with "my" software.

(You may scream in aggravation now! )
