Coding a Search Engine

A friend and I have been bored, and decided to start to learn how to code. We started off by being granted ownership of this one code, (html), and we continued to just “evolve” the code. Then we decided to learn PHP with mySQL, and we have been able to accomplish so much.

Anyways, one person has suggested this idea to me, and I am sure it isn’t easy, but what would be the first couple of steps in learning on how to make a search engine spider? I have a semi-decent hosting package, and I know html, php/mySQL, and css(the easiest launguage around…) but I know the a search engine spider would be totally different.

So, basically, what is the launguage that I would need to learn so my “spider” could pick up the meta tags that are on the webpage.

And, if w3schools doesn’t have a tutorial of that launguage, could anyone point me to a site that has a basic tutorial about it?

@pcthugAug 14.2006 — Although not the best language to complete such a task, PHP could spider (read, archive and follow defined links) a webpage.
