[Beginner Question] Having a website in the center of the page

Forgive me for asking this, as I am completly new to web design, but what’s the best way to have a website in the center of the page (with blank space on both sides)? Is it as simple as having some kind of table/border and just put empty space on both sides? How should I go about it, and how do I know how much space to leave? What should my minimum/maximum resolution be? (so that viewers don’t have to scroll on the bottom?). Right now I’m using Dreamweaver, if that’s any help.

@KravvitzAug 09.2006 — Don't rely on DreamWeaver's Design View. I recommend that the maximum width be 760px, unless someone is making a fluid/liquid width layout.

@FleeceAug 09.2006 — I agree with Kravvitz

tables are not that nice to your website...and can get pretty messy

DIVs with CSS are much better.

@KravvitzAug 09.2006 — Fleece, don't make a common newbie mistake -- the point of table-less layouts is not to simply replace tables with <div> elements. The point is to use semantically correct markup and then use CSS to make it look the way you want it to.

@fd9authorAug 10.2006 — Thanks for the info.

I was orignally planning on using framesets. How do those compare to CSS when you're trying to do a layout?

@KravvitzAug 10.2006 — CSS is much more flexible.

It is better to use PHP includes or SSI instead of frames and iframes.
