How is a site like GameFAQs built?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could explain how GameFAQs works. I’m fairly new to scripting (I’m a Graphic Designer and scripting tends to begin and end with ActionScript) but am just wanting to try and pick up more things. What I like in particular is the navigation of the site, and overall presentation. So basically I was wondering where on earth you would start with something like that? How do you do things such as:

  • – Have an A-Z linking to list of forums starting with that letter

  • – User account that works accross site and forums, like GameFAQs

  • – With account you can upload articles to be added to parent catagories. For example imdb.com, find a movie and then add reviews for that movie.

  • – Articles can be rated, when articles are rated an average rating is calculated for the user.

  • – The more comprehensive his/her reviews are, the higher his score stay

    • I know it’s entirely unrealistic, but I’m just interested more than anything how GameFAQs works.

    It doesn’t work in IE mind and the first box doesn’t work in FireFox, but it does all work in Safari, don’t have the foggiest clue why though?

    To build a replica yourself, you would need a great amount of knowledge with the previously mentioned subjects. An alternative shortcut is to install a pre-built Content Management System (CMS) that matches your needs.
