Detecting external application protocol

Is it possible from within the web page (i.e., with javascript) to detect whether that external protocol is available? I have not found an explicit method for doing so. I have also tried attempting to launch the URL with the external protocol and catching all errors. On IE, no error is caught and the user is taken to one of IE’s “I can’t open this page” pages.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
