Problems with an image map on a PHP page

Hi!

I’m having problems with an image map on a PHP page.

My website is http://www.sexualityeducation.com . As you can see, there’s a menubar at the top to navigate to different parts of the website, written in simple <map> code. The problem is, often when I click on the menubar, it doesn’t take me to the new page, but is unresponsive. If I click again, then 95% of the time it will take me there. When browsing the site, I’m running Safari (2.0.4) on a Mac (Mac OS 10.4.7). I thought it might be a problem unique to my computer, but some of our customers visiting our website are also reporting the same thing — that they were at the site and tried to access a different page using the menubar, and found it unresponsive, at least on the initial click.

Additional data points:
– The problem is intermittent — sometimes I go to the site and it works just fine. But it’s also common enough that it’s cause for concern. It happens far more often to me on this site than it does any other site (either other ones I run or other ones I visit).
– It seems the least responsive when first visiting the site. After clicking around a bit, it seems to “warm up” and the problem fades away, at least for that web session.
– At first I thought that perhaps the page hadn’t fully loaded, so therefore the map information (at the end of the code for the page) wasn’t yet available to the user. But, as you can see, these are not very complex pages that load quickly, and my browser certainly acts like its fully loaded by the time I click on the menubar.
– The problem is not limited to the homepage — the menubar is also unresponsive on other pages.
– There are other image maps on the site, and they all see to work fine.

The fact that customers visiting our website are having problems with this, too, is definitely concerning! Any insights you may have on the source of the problem and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Marshall

@PineSolPirateAug 04.2006 — I didn't check the site, but make sure you have the map tag with both an ID and NAME attrib. Thats gotten me a few times.

@mmillerauthorAug 10.2006 — Thanks -- it didn't have an ID tag, so we added it. Hopefully that will do the trick!
