i’ve been asked to do CSS. eek!

Hi,

Just yesterday i was approached by a friend who i have been doing alot of work for his business recently in the line of graphics and buttons, for programs he makes.

He knows i have a little knowledge in web design, and is not his forte. He had a customer in his shop asking for a website, he then thought of me. So i went over and we had a chat. He accepted the fact i mainly know wysiwyg at the moment, but seemed disapointed when i told him i knew no css.

He would still like me to go ahead with this site, but would be very cool and a nice surprise for him if i could include some css, to make the site load quickly and look good at the same time.

Rome wasnt built in a day, but if anyone has any quick fixes on offer, im all ears.

r.s.v.p

Thanks again. (great forum)

@NogDogJul 30.2006 — I think it depends on the person. Some people seem to pick up the concepts and techniques of CSS faster than others, due in part I suppose to their background and experience as well as natural inclinations. My general guideline, for whatever it's worth, is:

  • 1. First concentrate on clean, semantic HTML markup, and make sure it is valid.

  • 2. Learn how to apply classes and IDs to your HTML elements so that you can refer to them from your CSS stylesheets.

  • 3. Avoid the typical beginner's tendency toward "divitis" (the over-use of DIV elements when they are not needed, uselessly cluttering up their HTML mark-up).

  • 4. Stop thinking in terms of HTML tables and rigid grids, and start thinking in terms of columns.

  • 5. Once you're feeling fairly comfortable with CSS, read this article about "faux columns" from alistapart.com, as this is almost always a problem beginners (including myself) have trouble with.

@AnotherDesignerJul 30.2006 — a.g.r.c the one thing I'd recommend, is keep checking this forum everyday!

You'll find that any problems you encounter using CSS, Dreamweaver, Frontpage etc etc have usually been raised on here by someone in the same (or near identical) situation as yourself. And even if it isn't on here, don't be afraid to ask, because someone will know the answer - or an alternative solution! ?
