Hi,

i am working as a freelancer developing websites. A lot of my clients ask to be able to update their site themselves afterwards. I know that there are people out there who offer cms’ as part of their web design. I was wondering can anyone recommend a cms that i could easily build in to the website i was designing so that the client could edit basic text and images.

I am aware of jamoola and mambo however i dont like these solutions as they need to be installed on the cliets server. In a lot of cases this doesnt suit so i am looking for something i can just install myself along with the website and then they can use it to edit the website.

Any help on this is hugely appreciated!!

Thanks

@PineSolPirateJul 21.2006 — Both http://phpnuke.org/ and http://drupal.org/ are fan favorites. You can prob. just install the CMS system right alongside the website. Another option is build it from scratch, which can take a while, but is a good time ?

@ray326Jul 21.2006 — Exactly how do you expect a CMS to work if it isn't installed on the server with the clients' web sites? At any rate, here are a few you can consider and play with.

@alanjgraceauthorJul 22.2006 — I was referring to the fact that the clients hosting provider may already have jaoola or mambo installed on the server as opposed to me having to upload a cms script to the server. Some hosting companies do not allow installations.

Im looking for something thats already in script form that can just be uploaded to the site and integrated so that the client can then edit the text and images for the pages up there.

Can you recommend anything like this as oppose to mambo and jamoola where you have to create the site within those programs or using a plug in for the likes of dreamweaver.

@ray326Jul 25.2006 — You might try a stripped down blog like Gray Matter but I think anything you use will have some minimal installation process and server resource requirements.

@patenaudematJul 25.2006 — For simple blog-type websites, WordPress is pretty awesome. Drupal is really good too.

For my web design clients, I install a copy of my own CMS that I'm working on called Tux CMS. It's really good for flexible websites because themes are easy to develop for it, and it has the capability to theme PHP scripts that are totally separate from it (basically, it acts as if it's a part of Tux CMS-- that is, it uses the site's theme, gives the script access to all of Tux's properties, like current user's information, other content, etc.). It's not quite ready for prime time yet, but will be (hopefully) by the end of the summer. If you're interested, send me a message.

This really isn't intended to be a sales pitch (especially since Tux CMS is open source) :p I just thought I'd mention it.

Of course, just about any CMS you install will require access to a database. WordPress requires MySQL, Tux CMS can work with any SQL database (with MySQL being the preferred option), and Drupal can run with pretty much any database supported by PHP.

Hope it helps!

I can't definitely see a Beatles song parody with that... would make for some great advertising.

Of course, after that, you wouldn't ever be able to use Grey Matter on a Mac... the whole Apple v. Apple thing...

Success!
