Does a table make sense in this scenario- even though it is design

This is for the main page. 2 columns, 4 rows, right side rows combined into 1.
Top of the page has logo image, name and then 2 pictures. Javascript menu, then the “Table” is below the menu.

I have taken the time to learn CSS and all the benefits and understand the benefits. All other pages for the site are basic with information- maybe 1 or 2 images. Nothing fancy, maybe a bigger heading or different colored font, just info.

Scenario and Requirements:

  • 1.

First and foremost the the dance studio owner wishes to update the pages herself, including the home page. She knows Word and Excel.

  • 2.

An area for username/password to access just a few pages.

  • 3.

Originally she wanted to use FrontPage, but I discouraged that option since A. I am an Oracle DBA who works on Unix, B. I have read about many upload problems and page/directory htaccess issues. C. I know of and have used the .htaccess file on a unix system. Will have to train the owner on NVU or some other free editing tool and give “How to” documentation. (I have Dreamweaver)

With a table she can make content changes then drag the a column back to the size she wants if it overflows. However, I don’t every see her having the ability to change the css file to make column changes.

The multi-level menuing is currently javascript, and I am rethinking this too. If javascript is disabled, I still need another menu option, it appears that php is the way to go? Another thing I will have to learn. Or change every? page to include a basic noscript menu. However the change to the javascript menuing part would be easy to create directions for, if a new link/menu item is needed.

I am a dancer’s mom and am doing this in trade for dance tuition for my daughters. Of course I want to make it as easy on myself when having to support the turn over. I have indicated that I will log the time it takes to make any changes over the next year, so that she will know the effort involved, as she may change her mind.

  • Has anyone created a site where they had to turn over the content/updates to a very non-technical person? How best is it to acheive this? The person currently is charging a lot of money to make small changes. ie- changing a time on a current schedule…something that would take about 10 min.

Does a table make sense in this case?
If not, I am totally open to suggestions!
