Check external interface using jsp

Hi,

How do I implement following ? any suggestions ?

I have few buttons and links to external site. But sometimes they are down. and my site is waiting for response. Instead I would like to implement some thing which checks those site periodically . so when user clicks the button it will not wait. Instead it will give some standard page to tell user that the site is down. Any design suggestions?
