Character count including carriage

Im trying to make a character count. Ive looked all over the net but i cant find what i need. The hard part of the counter im trying to do is that when the person presses carriage it adds the remaining characters in the line to the total. Ive done that but i can’t figure out how to make backspace delete the blank spaces that were created when the person pushed carriage. The max number of cols is 70
