Accessing the Value of Form Field Labels

I have a text box with a label of User’s First Name coded like this:

<label for=”t1″>User’s First Name</label>
<input type=”text” id=”t1″ name=”fName” />

When validating the field, I would like to use the label’s value in my error message. For example, if the field is blank, how would I code the message to say, “Please complete the field labeled, User’s First Name”?
