Disable page behind DIV

Hi all,

I was unsure of how to search for this and not sure of the exact description.

Basically, I want to know how to make an entire page disabled behind a DIV area that is made visible (display:?.

I saw this for example on Netflix.com when you add a movie to the queue – what seems to be a DIV appears recommending more movies while the page is “disabled” in the background.

I am also assuming this technique is DHTML.

Thanks for any help in advance.
