Designing an intranet site . . . need advice .

[FONT=Georgia]Hi gang,

I have been approached by my supervisor to completely redesign our intranet site from the ground up. The current site is over 3 years old and in dire need of a total makeover. I am pumped to get going but have some concerns. This is where you come in. I need your opinions, suggestions, etc.

I want to design the site using the latest technology but here is my dilemma or blessing depending how you look at it. Our company uses Internet Explorer 6.0 as the standard, and since we are a non profit organization we get a ton of donations, monitors being on the top of the donation list. The monitors range anywhere from 15 to 20 inches.

With that said, which direction would you go? I have been reading up on “elastic” sites, which seems to be my best bet at this point. On the other hand Explorer is the default browser so I am wondering if “fixed” is the way to go. The majority of the monitors out there are 15-17 inches, and we support over 2500 users.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, comments or ideas.

@ray326Jun 12.2006 — I'd say do it with a fluid design and forget that you have a browser application standard code to the w3c standards.

Also, don't reinvent any wheels. http://opensourcecms.com

These are not quite the replies I had in mind. Does anyone out there have some legitimate and professional advice?

The only reason I would say to do a fixed width site is because you don't have enough content to fill out a full screen. Otherwise you would want to use up as much of the screen as possible, anything above the scroll line will get much more attention.

The best fluid layout I have seen so far is a 3 column layout that is completely fluid. You can find it here
