Does it make sense to make a mirror site as backup?

Can you have a setup that instead of doing backups for my website, if I was to mirror it instead can you set it up so that if the main site goes down vistors are redirected to the mirror instead?

Can this be done? I am unfamiliar with setting up a mirror site so if the above is possible how would I best go about it?

Are there better alternatives?

@carastasNov 22.2006 — the simplest thing is for you to put this site on 2 hostings, the domain name will have an NS from one server and one from the other one as backup (make sure that when the first server dies, it's NS dies with it)... then a sincronizer ftp and database (if applicable) for that site and ta-dah, that's it! ?
