Which tool should I use ?

Hi,
I have been learning html and css for a while now but I want to really see how certain pages are working.

Which is the best tool (preferably free) to enable me to downlaod an entire site to my local drive so I can analyse it easier .

Ofcourse I can go to each page veiwing souce and saving it – but its a real pain – does anyone know of a good tool to use for this ?

thanks ?

If you are talking about downloading someone else's site without username and password heaving been allocated to you, you are on your own. Otherwise, there's FlieZilla.

@the_treeJun 09.2006 — I think he's talking about spidering one site and downloading all the served contents.

@DaveinLondonauthorJun 09.2006 — FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client and server

No use to me - I have my own ftp sw and access.

I am not interested in getting past any security just speeding up my learning of css and good quality markup.,

Yes I think the term spidering the site might apply.

I did have some sw on my old pc ( disk crashed )

but I cant remember what the sw was.

@drhowarddrfineJun 09.2006 — Google for WinHTTrack

@WebJoelJun 09.2006 — Sadly, -I think I know what he's asking about. There is a program (free? -not sure) called "snagIt" I think(?? -Correct me if I am wrong!). Basically, it 'takes a snapshot' of the page's source (of course there's more to it than just this, because one could just use VIEW-SOURCE.. It might take all external files and import them to the main local file, and possibly referance what part affects what other part, etc... It is basically, 'for analyzing other's web sites to see how they're constructed' goes the litany.. I visited the program briefly and well, -it's not for me.) There are way so many open-source free 'how to do it' sites like any of Stu Nicholl's "css play" sites which immediately spring to mind...

*However*... -you wanna learn D-HTML from someone's else really kewl templates, fast & easy? How about using a FREE D-HTML template, a template (or twenty??), that is your to experiment, tweak, improve and even corrupt&destroy upon? Then check out this:

http://www.strangebanana.com

This site generates a totally unique, fully-functioning and correctly-validating (well, most of the time!) D-HTML template.

Snag a few of these freebies, -and experiment away!! ?

@DaveinLondonauthorJun 09.2006 — While waiting I googled for website spider

and found the WinHTTrack

Yes that is what I had before - and is all I needed.

Still I will take a look at the templates - but usually I find them a waste of time.

But I appreciate the help.

@DaveinLondonauthorJun 09.2006 — Just wanted to say thanks for pointing me to strangebanana !!! ?

What a brilliant site ! - a really neat idea ! and clever.

and I immidiately thought of Zen Garden.

I came across The css Zen Garden site a few weeks ago and that really encouraged me to work on my css. I prefer to handcode (with help from HTML-kit), but alot of poeple just put something together in DW (full of tables) and ofcourse they do it quicker than me (and nicer) cos I'm still learning - thats why I want to study what others are doing especially in css and get better fast !

BTW - he said he wrote it in C# - do you think it could be written in php ?

Cheers

@WebJoelJun 10.2006 — Yeah I know! -Isn't "strangebanana" a really kewl site?? I had a lot of fun showing this site to people at the college after classes. ? Once I got the gist of hand-coding and then, using an HTML-editor, having a pre-made very kewl template made sence... I could now experiment with ideas that I had not previously encountered...

p.s., 99% of the time yes, I agree tht template sites are a totaly waste of time. Most of them use proprietary stuff, table-only and severely nested ones at that, or are 100% FLASH which is okay, but not for dial-up concerns or people whom have FLASH turned-off.

"SB" is just pure D-HTML code (with a minimal of propretary stuff which can be edited/corrected out). And it's FREE, and FREE to use for personal/commercial. ?
