index.php?alink=………. please explain

I wish to know how this referral link actually works.
I want to create a page that will work through all registration processes. I will like to have all process on the index.php file. For instances, I want php to verify if a user has input a file or not and display the error on the topmost of the first field.
I will appreciate it if any one can asap.

Unlike moving from page1.html to page2.html to page3.html then to thankyou.html, I want to work/process every info on index.php and then a thankyou message on the same page and back to login page.

..........................what you want to put here, form, images,whatever
