Annoying differences between Firefox and Internet Explorer

Hi guys and girls and children of all ages. I am getting pretty annoyed of the differences between Firefox and Internet Explorer in how they both display my page. Sometimes IE gives me trouble and sometimes Firefox does. In this scenario Firefox is being annoying. I tested my page using IE and works like a charm, however tested it using Firefox and it comes out all distorted and blah. Had a few goes at cracking it but can’t seem to figure out where the problem is ?

I have developed quite a few pages but this one is just plain annoying. Its using CSS and XHTML.

CSS File can be downloaded via HERE

Thank you ?

@iOlamauthorMay 18.2006 — I edited the link so it should work now. I have sorted some of the nasty bits so it would work now (fingers crossed) between IE and Firefox. Although, I keep getting a empty space on my banner on the right side so I had to use:

width: 101%;

Leaving it as only 100% leaves a gap on the right. Any ideas why this may be occuring?

Many thanks

Olam

@drhowarddrfineMay 18.2006 — I am getting pretty annoyed of the differences between Firefox and Internet Explorer
In almost all cases, Firefox is displaying exactly how you code it. IE is old, buggy and non-standard. That is the problem. Never, ever use IE to design with.

EDIT: There is no "float: top left"

@iOlamauthorMay 18.2006 — Internet Explorer 7 should be functioning and displaying the same as Firefox would be right? Windows Vista will be providing this ability fully?

I would love to use Firefox as my benchmark and base of my design and basically test my site using nothing but Firefox but due to me passing on my CV to potential employers if it doesn't look right in IE they'll most likely pass ? I don't like using IE as the whole meaning of alt tags etc are of no use :mad:

Additionally, if I want something to span right across the screen I used 100% but it leaves a strange gap but when I used 101% is stretches but have to scroll a fraction...

Thanks Olam

@drhowarddrfineMay 18.2006 — Haven't finished looking at the code yet. See my edit above. Validate your html and css and correct any other errors.

IE7 is not much better than IE6. They only fixed 7 CSS bugs from 1998 and added CSS selectors. Otherwise, it is IE6 in a new wrapper. Eight years behind the standards and counting.

You must use Firefox to design and test your initial code so you know your code is correct. Then you can adjust for IEs quirks and bugs. If it works in Firefox, then IE is the problem.

EDIT: Your html validates but you have 3 or 4 css errors.

@iOlamauthorMay 18.2006 — Thanks Howard the info and I will take what you said directly and begin using Firefox for my development pratices. I also found a handy Firefox development plugin which enables me to disable StyleSheets, scale downs etc ?

There is a simple fix for IEs incorrect interpretation of alt attributes on images. Simply add a title attribute as well.

<img src="myimg.gif" alt="alternate text if image doesn't display" title="">

You can add tooltip text into the title attribute that will then display as a tooltip in all browsers including IE.

@WebJoelMay 18.2006 — Sounds as if IE wants to put a border, a padding and/or a margin around your page. Always start your STYLE declarations with this:
body, html {border:0; padding:0; margin:0;}
This re-sets IE values to "zero". All other browsers do this by default. But not IE.

And you can add another 'body' declaration so:
body, html {border:0; padding:0; margin:0;}
body {background-color:#foo; etc.}
is permitted. I like having the first 'body' tag stand all by itself, and the second body tag actually have the stylings that I want for the page. It's my way of advertising that IE is faulty.

@ladymsdivaMay 19.2006 — well, i've made one page so far, and used IE to test it during the process.

i just put it into firefox and whoa, does it ever look crappy! back to the drawing board.

@iOlamauthorMay 19.2006 — ^^ is that suppose to be sarcasm? Cause if it is I have made quite a few pages in ASP/ASP.NET/JavaScript, SQL and know XHTML and CSS. I had a problem with this I wanted some info on the matter. I appreciate all of the replies whom have guided and provided useful information. To post comments like that I suggest kindergarden would be ideal.

Thanks everyone for your help. It has been very much appreciated ?

@ladymsdivaMay 19.2006 — no its not sarcasm and if anything's 'kindergarten' around here it's your whining post above! thanks for the laugh, and have a nice day!

@iOlamauthorMay 19.2006 — I wasn't whining... where did I add a whining phrase within my post? Yes I said it is annoying but thats not regarded as "whining". To be honest I posted here for help on the topic and considering your post did not add to the topic in hand I would like it if you would be kind enough not to reply.

Thank you everyone else for their comments/suggestions and guidance. Web Joel I did not know of that command and am grateful for that post ?

@Derek_ParkerMar 09.2008 — iOlam - you have to realize that there are people in the world whose sole achievement is known that IE is for lusers, and that Firefox rulez. Since they know this, they have to point it out on every occasion to empower themselves. Your interlocutor here is such a person.
