Is 72 dpi going to stick around?

I’m wondering if 72dpi for images is a rule that’s going to stay with us much longer. I know a lot of screens are at 96 or even 120 now and I’d like to know if it’s forseeable that this rule of thumb will be changing soon.

Also how does that effect handheld browsers such as cellphones or PDA’s. I assume their pixel density isn’t as high, but are they generally on a fast enough connection to where some extra file size won’t be a problem?

Please let me know your thoughts, Thanks!

@David_HarrisonMay 15.2006 — Most desktop LCD screens already run at 96dpi, I think CRT's still use 72dpi, don't quote me on that though. Of course, you can tell CRT's to use a whole range of resolutions, so in the end I guess it's up to the end user, however most 17" CRT's are run at 1024x768 and all 17" LCD's run at 1280x1024.

19" LCD screens are somewhat odd though, they run at the same resolution as 17" LCD screens, so they have a lower pixel density, not sure what it is though.

As far as PDA's, I've got no idea what the pixel density on those is, at a guess, I'd go with "very high". Some of them have tiny screens that run at 640x480.

At any rate, pixel density doesn't make any difference to web development, resolution is what's important.
