confused about terminology – popup window?

I may be overcomplicating things but I think I am being confused by the term “popup window”. I am trying to do this and wondering what terms I would use to search for info on how to:

I have a website that shows product thumbnails….I would like the visitor to be able to click a “view large” or whatever button and a window would pop up leaving the original page open. The window would be about the size of a quarter page and would open centered with no borders and it would display a larger version of the product and the paypal functions. Right now I have the larger image which is an entire new page but I think the smaller, controlled size appears much more professional. Bravenet.com offers a “tell a friend” pop up that is very nice but their code seems to refer to a template or something that I do not have access to.

Is this considered a popup window? Most articles I see are about popup advertising and how to stop popup blockers. Am I confusing these two things? Any suggestions on where I would go to learn about how to create a dynamic new window would be greatly appreciated.

@felgallApr 27.2006 — That is a legitimate use for popup windows. Where the actual popup is called by your visitor clicking on a link they have requested the popup and most popup blockers let the popup appear. It is only when windows are set to popup automatically that popup blockers normally block them. Each blocker varies slightly though in what it blocks and what it lets through.

@webmaniacauthorApr 27.2006 — thanks! i really like the code that i found except it seems like a lot of code in the head of the document to place code for each popup and then each popup has code in the body as well. i wonder if there is a way to baseref the head code or something
