What would be a better way of making a Next link?

This works fine, it is just that when something is deleted from the database, it shows a blank screen, for the number that was deleted.
$num = $_GET[“id”];
$nxt = $num + 1;
if($id != $max){
echo”
<a class=”contentlink” href=”the_riddle.php?id=$nxt”>Next</a></p></center>”;
}
else{
echo” <a class=”contentlink” href=”the_riddle.php?id=1″>First</a></center>”;
}
@balloonbuffoonApr 26.2006 — You could query the database like this:
$result = mysql_query("SELECT id FROM table WHERE id > $num ORDER BY id DESC");
if(mysql_num_rows($result)>0) $nxt = $mysql_result($result,0,"id");
if(!empty($nxt)){
echo"
<a class="contentlink" href="the_riddle.php?id=$nxt">Next</a></p></center>";
} else {
echo" <a class="contentlink" href="the_riddle.php?id=1">First</a></center>";
}
