mysqli has been around since php 4. in php 5 it moved out of core and was heavily rewritten (at least thought to be)

There’s also no discussion of the limitations and inconsistencies – mysqli_error type functions are not object oriented. Requires MySQL version >= 4.1.3. Also, it’s an odd article to be on database journal – to me it seems more of a php builder article. Also, it’s a weird way to start off in mysqli, instead of examining the differences.
