PEAR and PhpDocumentor

Has anyone used PEAR and/or PhpDocumentor on their local machines?
I am trying to install PhpDocumentor. The installation help file said that the easiest way was to use PEAR, so I followed the instructions on the PEAR website to install it.

Then the PhpDocumentor install file said to issue the pear command to point to the package.xml file for PhpDocumentor which is included in the ZIP file: it isn’t. However, there is a script called create_package.xml.php in the scripts subfolder. But it fails, telling me that it cannot file the file ‘PEAR/PackageFileManager.php’. I searched my system and this file does not exist. I just ran the update script from [url]http://go-pear.org[/url], and the file is still not there.

Does anyone have any idea where to go from here?
