Search #’s versus search results?

Trying to attain top 5 status for a particular search term, is there a general ratio where it’s not worth the effort for that term?
Example: February searches for “home building” – 250,000 (MSN, Yahoo, Google)
Google search results returned – 331,000,000.
What’s the max to bother with?

Thnx

@_lt_Eddie_gt_Apr 12.2006 — Unfortunately it's not that simple. The most important thing is that you attain good visibility for the searching phrase your market are using to find your products or services. It's certainly an indicator when there are plenty of results and people paying for AdWords that there is traffic for that phrase but ultimately, the more refined the result, the more likely a client will find you over a casual browser. Which is more important?

The answer to your question is something that will take at least 12 months of statistical analysis and sales tracking.
