calculate alpha value between two colors

i am have a hard time trying to create algorithm for calculating the alpha value from two colors

example:
color1 rgb(145, 115, 112)
color2 rgb(76, 60, 59)
i know the alpha value is 122 (rgb(0, 0, 0)) over color1 to get color2

thanks

@ShrineDesignsauthorApr 05.2006 — so far i have come up with this, but for some reason doesn't work for grayscale valuessum := RGB1 - RGB2
alpha := sum[n-1] // n = no. octals in sum, last two octals of sum
color := 0xffffff - (sum * 2)

Success!
