I can’t get laravel to start, getting the error: “No Application Encryption Key Has Been Specified”

I downloaded a laravel-based repository from github but I haven’t been able to start the project at all, I keep getting this error message: “No Application Encryption Key Has Been Specified”, how can I get this to work properly?

@XavierConleyAug 12.2022 — You need to set laravel's encryption key (found in your .env file's APP_KEY entry). The best way to do this is to use the command: php artisan key:generate
