Im developing a web/mobile app foor project management (and more). I intend to make it free. Would a. org be ok as the .com is taken. Its designed to target small businesses and startups.
@regansJan 03.2012 — #Many developers of free software use .org, as it builds trust among customers, suggesting the site aims to general good, not only mencantile interests. It is also a popular and wide recognizable extension. Also, the process of registering for a .org domain is simple, you don't have to provide documentation that you're a nonprofit organization. I would go for it.
@casdirJan 22.2012 — #I'm a big fan of .org domain names, they rank very well in Google (and they sound good too). If .com is taken, then .org is the next best choice. Alternatively, you can also check out Sedo to see if any better domain names are for sale ?
@BrianJamesFeb 08.2012 — #.COM is the best but you can also choose others such as .NET or .ORG. In choosing .ORG, make sure that you are an organization before you purchase.
@sunny_saxenaFeb 18.2012 — #.Com .net and .org are all Top Level Domain Extensions (TLDs). As far as search engines concerned, it doesn't really matter which one you go for. Google gives the same weightage to all tree domain extensions.
Secondly, you don't really need to have an organization in order to register .org domains. No major registrar asks you to confirm whether you're an organization or not.
Thirdly, I'd really advise you avoid Hyphens in between keywords, unless you're specifically buying domain name for Search Engines or For Better Rankings in Search Engines. Make it simply for your visitors to type it and remember it.
@kevin31Feb 23.2012 — #If both .net & .org are available, which one you will get?
I saw some .com domains are taken but user registered .co instead of .net / .org - I just don't know why, maybe because GoDaddy spent a lot of money to promo .co ?
