NetMechanic

by Scott Clark

Test your site on the Web, free.

So you’ve finally finished developing that Web site that you’ve been working on for the last month. It looks great, but you just got an email telling you that there’s a few bad links on the site. Uh-oh. Everything worked a week ago. With more than 10,000 Web sites popping up each week, and just about as many disappearing in the same time span, the Web is a very dynamic medium, and links that were good this week may not work next week. What are you gonna do? Buy another piece of expensive software or spend hours surfing each link?

Enter the NetMechanic. The NetMechanic's Web site is the answer to your prayers. The NetMechanic can check your Web site for HTML syntax errors, or it can check all the links on your site to make sure they are still valid. The site can either be checked in the foreground, meaning that as you wait, you see a graphical icon that indicates the progress. For whole sites (instead of single pages), the process can take place in the background. What this means is that the NetMechanic will email you when the testing is over, and you simply go to the URL specified on the email, and all your links are listed with an explanation of errors, bad links, etc. on a page-by-page basis.

So what’s it going to cost you for this premium service? Nothing, nada, not a thing! I honestly don’t know what the NetMechanic receives for providing this service, but it won’t cost you a thing. You don’t even have to sift through tons of banner ads or "please fill out this huge form." The process is simple: type your site’s address in the top form, decide if you want the process to run in the foreground or the background, whether you want the whole site checked or simply one page, and type your email address for the completion notification to be sent to. Click the submit button and your site is on its way to being perfect, at least in the way of HTML and links. Who said the only things free in life are pennies and matches?
