The HotWired Web site is a lot like its print counterpart, Wired magazine--either you love it or you abhor it! I happen to love it, if not for their content, then for their new perspective for a new media form. Their artwork alone is worth a regular visit, and they have plenty of regular visitors...according to their own press information, the site receives 650,000 hits a day. That's nothing to sneeze at.
HotWired Style: Principles for Building Smart Web Sites showcases a variety of Web sites and points out what works and what doesn't. Author Jeffrey Veen gives you both sides of the story, pointing out some sites along the way that never quite managed to tell their own story--at least the story they were trying to tell.
Aside from the site critiques, Veen gives developers tips on how to structure a site for user accessibility, how to focus the user's attention where you want it, designing intuitive icons, and many other useful tidbits.
Although the Wired-haters out there may not like the garish colors, they may do well to heed some of the advice that Veen gives. This book is a must read for site designers, Web developers, and print media technicians who are moving towards the Web.
