This book is a first for our review section. Usually, we review books that tell you how to properly code HTML, DHTML, XML, Java, JavaScript, CGI, SMIL, or some relevant Web development topic. The CDNow Story: Rags to Riches on the Internet is basically an autobiography of a successful business. That said, let me assure you that you will learn more about creating and running a Web business from this book than you will from reading five typical books on e-business.
If you've ever visited CDNow.com, you know that it features hundreds of thousands of CD titles, including rock, jazz, new age, alternative, classical, country, blues, punk, and practically every other class of music one can think of. You've probably listened to samples of music from their archives, and you may have even placed an order for some of your favorite music.
What you probably didn't realize is that when this site first debuted, it started as a telnet site, not a Web site. And that the programming for the site was accomplished by Matthew, one of the founders of CDNow.
Jason and Matthew Olim created CDNow from the ground up, and this book takes
the reader through all the pitfalls that befell the duo. It tells the reader about
many aspects of the creation of CDNow, including how they initially used an archaic
query language to perform searches--and why you should instead use SQL instead
if you have any choice.
The CDNow Story is a true story, and although you will undoubtedly
learn something about the business of selling products on the Web, you will also
find the book a pleasure to read. It's not a huge tome, like so many Web books
are, but rather a light, quick read. You'll finish the 256 page book within a
couple of sittings, and you'll find yourself motivated, encouraged and provoked
when it comes time to develop your own million dollar e-business.
