With such a flurry of books coming out about XML, what does this book offer that the others don't? How about a head-on approach written for Web developers, starting with practical applications of XML that you can use, and moving into the development of DTDs, or Document Type Declarations.

While other books on XML often delve into the Java, C++ and HTML worlds, Just XML stays focused on using XML, and just XML, to create a more managable, gentler World Wide Web.

Author John E. Simpson doesn't assume that you know anything about XML, and introduces you to the concepts of XML by telling you first what it isn't. For instance, according to Simpson, XML isn't a markup language. Simpson asserts that there is no "single, broadly useful set of markup that you must earn in order to learn XML," but rather XML is about "separate markup for separate purposes." Here's a sampling of topics that are covered:

  • Part 1: XML Basics
  • Part 2: XML Linking
  • Part 3: XML: Doing It In Style
  • Part 4: Rolling Your Own XML Application
  • Part 5: XML Directions
Part Four of the book, "Rolling Your Own XML Applications," tells you why a DTD is important, why it's better to make your own rather than using a pre-defined DTD and how to go about creating your own from scratch. The book covers the software that is available now for creating DTDs and XML documents, and goes into the future of XML and its potential applications.

If you're trying to get a grasp on XML before it becomes a full-fledged industry standard, Just XML can be just the quick ticket you are looking for. Simpson's use of B-movie story lines makes the XML lesson both interesting and informative, a quality that's rare for such technical topics!
