Drag 'n' Drop CGI

Drag 'n' Drop CGI

Publisher: Addison-Wesley
Author: Bob Weil and Chris Baron
ISBN: 0-201-41966-1
Publication Date: Jul 97
Retail Price: $32.95

At some point in your Web career, you've probably had the need for some type of script. It could've been a simple counter, or a script to process the data from a form, or you may've really needed a shopping cart application. You probably took a look at what was available and found that it was either too expensive or too difficult to put into place. If only someone would put out a "kit" with scripts, instructions and tips--one that won't cost an arm and a leg.

Enter Bob and Chris' book Drag 'n' Drop CGI. They've included some Perl and JavaScript applications on the accompanying CD, and have written instructions in a language that your grandmother can understand (heck, granny may be the Webmaster these days). They give you tips that will save you from pulling your hair out, and guide you along, telling you if the script in question is right for your situation or not. Included are the following scripts:

  • a counter
  • a floating menu
  • form processing
  • Web site search engine
  • Interactive forms
  • form validation
  • A Shopping Cart application (3 chapters are devoted to it)
Nothing great can be too easy, they say, and this book is no different in that regard. You'll still have to get in there and configure the scripts, and you're expected to know your basic HTML before you get into the examples. A little Perl and/or JavaScript knowledge wouldn't hurt, although it's not necessary.

Is it worth the $32 dollars? Go take a look at a few commercial Web applications. Now look at the price. If you can use even one of the scripts that are included in the book, you've got your money's worth. And if you actually learn something, and you will, then you're making a real profit. Can't go wrong.
