Adobe Photoshop 5.5

By Linda Cole

New and Enhanced Features of Photoshop 5.5

Save for the Web

The Web designer's goal is to pair the best looking images possible with optimal download and display times. Add to that mix the need to check how the images appear in other browsers on other operating systems, and a simple image can become quite a task. Photoshop 5.5 includes comprehensive controls transforming these tasks from time-consuming drudgery to...dare I say it?...something quick and easy! Oh, OK. Maybe not quick and easy, but a long sight better than storing numerous browsers on the hard drive of two different operating systems.

Preset GIF and JPG combinations offer quick optimization in both Photoshop 5.5's Save for the Web and ImageReady's onscreen Optimize Palette. You can also add custom combinations to the Optimization Named settings.

LiveView panels offer a choice of 2-up or 4-up views for comparing the original image with optimized versions. Each view displays details about that view such as format, file size, download time, number of colors, compression and more.

Color controls allow you to add, delete, edit, and lock colors to minimize the number of colors while maintaining image quality and controlling browser dither.

The addition of the innovative Lossy Gif option reduces file sizes often by as much as 5%-40%.

Create complex painterly effects easily, without specifying colors or applying careful strokes, with the Art History Brush. Just drag the brush around the canvas to apply a pre-set effect that you have specified in the Art History Brush dialog box; control the size, opacity, fidelity, tolerance and stroke styles.
